His team helped <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.constructiondive.com\/news\/walmart-mass-timber-new-corporate-hq\/744590\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>erect Walmart\u2019s corporate headquarters<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span> in Bentonville, Arkansas. The 1-million-square-foot structure features 21,000 cubic meters of cross laminated timber and glulam.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>He acknowledged, however, that there are some differences between the two materials that ironworkers should know about before they take on mass timber jobs.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u201cMass timber, I kind of joke about it with the guys, has feelings. It&#8217;s an architectural finished product,\u201d Foust said. \u201cIf a worker hits the mass timber too hard, that could leave a dent that would require repairs down the road. Structural steel can take more of a beating.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"standard-heading\"><span><span><span><span><span>Gearing up for more<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Ironworkers expect that demand is going to grow for their services in the mass timber sector. With that, they\u2019re gearing up to learn more about using the material.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Thirty-five Iron Workers locals now train with mockups, or facsimiles, of mass timber projects,\u00a0according to a Sept. 29 news release sent to Construction Dive. For ironworkers, that&#8217;s erecting the project\u2019s structures.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>In a recent example of blending crafts to achieve mass timber success, McCarthy Building Cos. delivered the Brookhaven City Centre project in Brookhaven, Georgia. Ironworkers saw their skills with structure and connection details translate, and carpenters benefitted from their background in precise layout and installation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u201cBy combining those skill sets, we weren\u2019t approaching the work from a single point of view.
