EDWARDSBURGH CARDINAL, ONT.\u00a0\u2014 Construction is now underway on the single largest battery storage facility ever procured in Canadian history, the Ontario government reports.<\/p>\n
Once complete, the new Skyview 2 Battery Energy Storage System will provide enough capacity to power nearly 400,000 homes.<\/p>\n
The $750 million project is a lithium-ion battery energy storage facility procured through the Independent Electricity System Operator\u2019s\u00a0.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s being developed in a partnership between\u00a0\u00a0and the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation on a site of less than 30 acres of rural land, a release describes.<\/p>\n
It will feature approximately 400 battery containers, which are each the size of a 20-foot shipping container.<\/p>\n
Once operational in 2027, the facility will store electricity from Ontario\u2019s grid during periods of low demand and return that stored power to the system when demand is higher, the release explains. Up to 300 jobs will be created during construction and additional operational positions will follow.<\/p>\n
Skyview 2 builds on other projects such as the\u00a0, and brings Ontario\u2019s total energy storage capacity to nearly 3,000 megawatts and collectively creates up to 3,000 jobs across the province.<\/p>\n
Energy storage will allow the storage of baseload generation like nuclear and hydro\u00a0while also supporting the integration of intermittent resources like wind and solar.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
