The majority of designers (82 percent) use AI regularly and have positive feelings toward the tool. Seventy-one percent believe it can boost creativity at work. Still, designers are anxious about AI. Most (54 percent) worry about homogeneity and diminished originality stemming from AI, 44 percent cite ethical issues like plagiarism and bias, and 39 percent still fear a loss of creativity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1003297229\" src=\"https:\/\/www.canadiancontractor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ai-designer-study-630x354.jpg\" alt=\"-\" width=\"630\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.canadiancontractor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ai-designer-study-630x354.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.canadiancontractor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ai-designer-study-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.canadiancontractor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ai-designer-study-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.canadiancontractor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ai-designer-study-2048x1151.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.canadiancontractor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ai-designer-study-250x141.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.canadiancontractor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ai-designer-study-600x337.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\"><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Other key findings from the report include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Designers turn to ChatGPT more than any other creative AI tool\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">85 percent of designers use ChatGPT to support design work, while Canva (38 percent), Photoshop (33 percent), and Midjourney (28 percent) trail behind;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Designers view AI as a productivity tool versus a creative collaborator\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The majority of designers (69 percent) have used AI for visualizing design ideas \u2014 a creative function \u2014 but only 21 percent see \u201ccreativity and ideation\u201d as AI\u2019s biggest advantage. Instead, 57 percent cite \u201cspeed and efficiency\u201d as the top benefit;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Generational patterns challenge tech adoption norms\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Design veterans aged 55 to 64 lead AI visualization adoption at 77 percent \u2014 the highest rate across all age groups \u2014 and show the greatest satisfaction with current tools at 65 percent. Experienced professionals with 11 to 20 years in the field also champion AI, showing 51 percent daily usage, 87 percent believe that AI enhances creativity, and 57 percent feel strongly about AI\u2019s positive impact on the industry;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">AI anxiety is highest among young designers\u2026<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Although concerns remain and satisfaction is split, designers are largely optimistic about AI\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">58 percent of designers are satisfied with current AI tools, while 42 percent report dissatisfaction;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">76 percent of designers believe AI will have a positive impact on the field of interior design;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Designers want tools that are built for their unique workflows\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">When asked about the next wave of AI development, top-requested features span the entire design workflow:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">71 percent want easier visualization with real products;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">62 percent want tools to translate AI visuals to real-world materials and products;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">59 percent want translation to real-world drawings;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">51 percent want better material sourcing and selection;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Students show the highest demand for material translation tools (90 percent), while experienced professionals aged 45 to 54 lead in requesting visualization with real products (85 percent);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">There\u2019s an untapped opportunity for AI tools that support material sourcing, client communication and project management\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Designers use AI the most for visualization (62 percent), concepting (58 percent), and moodboarding (52 percent), while applying it the least for material sourcing (35 percent), client communication (30 percent), and project management (22 percent);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Neutrals, simplicity, and sustainable materials are trending\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">73 percent of designers describe their current material palette as \u201cearthy, natural, and organic,\u201d 49 percent of designers are incorporating minimalism into their current projects, and 50 percent are embracing \u201cquiet luxury;\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">52 percent of designers prioritize sustainability credentials when selecting materials, and 54 percent confirm clients are more interested in sustainable materials compared to five years ago.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThese findings underscore my core belief that AI tools must enhance the \u201cgreat creative mess\u201d \u2014 where the flow state lives and the magic happens \u2014 bridging creative ideation with practical application,\u201d said Guy Adam Ailion, co-founder and CEO of Mattoboard. \u201cIt\u2019s clear that designers aren\u2019t shying away from AI \u2014 they\u2019re asking for smarter AI that understands their creative process and the built environment.
