{"id":33362,"date":"2025-11-24T23:36:13","date_gmt":"2025-11-25T07:36:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/construction-leadership-do-your-actions-support-your-words\/"},"modified":"2025-11-24T23:36:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T07:36:13","slug":"construction-leadership-do-your-actions-support-your-words","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/construction-leadership-do-your-actions-support-your-words\/","title":{"rendered":"Construction leadership \u2014 Do your actions support your words?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As a senior leader, I often stand in front of our crews and say the same things: We support you on safety, we invest in your careers, we create opportunity and provide training, yet the question that truly matters, the one people judge you by every day is much simpler: Do our actions match our words?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Research in construction is clear \u2013 what leaders do, predicts what workers do. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A recent meta-analysis study involving over 7,000 participants found when leaders set a safety vision, involve crews in problem solving, and remove hierarchical barriers, (removing the \u2018us versus them\u2019 phenomena) that this had the strongest measurable effect on safety outcomes <\/span><a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/admsci14090212\" target=\"_blank\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">(Zhao et al., 2024).<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> In contrast, simply talking about safety without exhibiting it in every situation resulted in lower safety performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cActions speak louder than words or walking the talk\u201d is not just a slogan; it is a proven safety practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While setting a high standard through example is important, so is authenticity. Studies show when leaders are transparent, self-aware, and consistent in their values, safety climates strengthen (<\/span><a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/j.2044-8325.2012.02064.x\" target=\"_blank\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Clarke, 2013<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">). Crews respond positively when company leaders visibly and consistently demonstrate safe behaviours.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Leading through example by wearing PPE, honouring stop-work calls and following up on near-miss reports as examples help build credibility from the top down, and credibility builds a culture of safety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The same \u201cactions over words\u201d principle applies to career building and training. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Research strongly shows companies who invest in and support structured and meaningful craft\/trades training programs see positive measurable returns.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) found 96 per cent of companies experienced productivity gains, 77 per cent saw safety improvements and 84 per cent reported better retention from training investments.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For years, students moving through the K\u201312 education system have been encouraged to become \u201clifelong learners,\u201d and they now expect their employers to commit to their ongoing training once they enter the workforce. Investing in meaningful training consistently demonstrates its value and delivers a strong return on investment.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Construction leaders can demonstrate true alignment between their words and actions through consistent, visible behaviours. Simple engagement practices such as making safety both visible and reciprocal, participating in pre-job planning sessions, and promptly addressing hazards identified by crews reflect a senior leader\u2019s genuine commitment to safety and demonstrates a clear pattern of follow-through.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Research continues to show these behaviours help strengthen and sustain a strong safety climate across the organization, while also predicting higher levels of compliance (<\/span><a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/fpsyg.2022.827694\" target=\"_blank\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Yang et al., 2022<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">).\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Closing the loop visibly when workers raise concerns by communicating back that \u201cwe fixed X by Y date,<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> serves as a powerful form of transparent communication, providing tangible proof that leadership rhetoric is backed by action.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As Clarke notes, \u201cfeedback completion and transparency are hallmarks of authentic leadership.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yet, when speaking to crews, a common question often surfaces within my mind: \u201cDue to the generational gap, does the younger generation respond to messaging from senior leaders?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The answer is yes, but only when those messages are backed by visible action.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A 2024 study by BDO Canada found younger workers value proof over promises; they want to see actions that demonstrate genuine commitment rather than rely on words alone.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Generation Z, now entering the trades, prioritizes transparency, purpose, honesty and opportunities for career growth.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To truly engage them, leaders must show rather than merely tell <\/span><a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forconstructionpros.com\/business\/labor-workforce-development\/article\/22925011\/adp-6-ways-the-construction-industry-can-retain-gen-z-workers\" target=\"_blank\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">(ADP, 2024)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. When speaking to the younger workforce share real, relatable examples such as apprentices from within your organization advancing to foremen in their 20s, employees earning six-figure incomes without student debt, or crews using modern technology on jobsites.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Younger workers tend to be skeptical of rhetoric and believe in what they can see <\/span><a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bdo.ca\/insights\/from-crisis-to-opportunity-reshaping-the-construction-industry-for-gen-z-talent\" target=\"_blank\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">(BDO Canada, 2024)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Thus, engaging with them by providing concrete examples in an honest transparent manner provides the proof over promise.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It goes without saying that when we walk the talk, our visible actions build trust.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So, the next time we tell our crews, \u201cWe support you<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> we must be ready to prove it with data, with decisions, with follow-through and by our lived example. Words set expectations, but actions earn trust.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the trades, trust is more than a value \u2013\u00a0 it\u2019s a safety system, a training system and a retention strategy all in one.
