Frank Gehry, the Toronto-born architect whose sculptural buildings reshaped cities from Bilbao to Los Angeles, has died at his home in Santa Monica at the age of 96. His office confirmed the news following a brief respiratory illness. Widely regarded as one of the most influential designers of his generation, Gehry leaves behind a global body of work. His legacy includes two of Toronto\u2019s most significant cultural projects: the Art Gallery of Ontario<\/a>‘s Transformation AGO and the under-construction Forma<\/a> towers.<\/p>\n Gehry was born Frank Owen Goldberg in Toronto in 1929. He arrived at architecture indirectly, first exploring ceramics at the University of Southern California before shifting disciplines when a mentor introduced him to the work of Raphael Soriano. He opened his own practice in 1962.\u00a0<\/p>\n Gehry\u2019s international reputation was cemented with the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Several major commissions followed. These include the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Dancing House in Prague, and the Vitra Design Museum in Germany. Later projects included New World Center in Miami, the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, and the rippled facade of 8 Spruce Street in New York.<\/p>\n Forma marks Gehry\u2019s most ambitious Canadian commission and a rare opportunity for Toronto to host one of his large-scale residential works. The two-tower development at King and Duncan streets, rising 73 and 84 storeys for Great Gulf<\/a>, Dream Unlimited<\/a>, and Westdale Properties<\/a>, brings his sculptural sensibility to the skyline through a pairing of reflective curtain wall glazing and folded stainless steel panels. On the East Tower, now well into construction, the cladding alternates between smooth glazing and faceted metal surfaces that create a cascading \u201cwaterfall\u201d effect as light shifts across the elevation. When complete, the West Tower is to become the tallest residential building Gehry has designed.<\/p>\n Gehry\u2019s return to Toronto came through the ‘Transformation AGO’ gallery expansion, completed in 2008, which restructured the century-old Art Gallery of Ontario into a more coherent whole after decades of incremental, maze-like additions. The redesign introduced the 600-foot Galleria Italia along Dundas Street, a prominent glass-and-wood canopy that realigned the entrance sequence and reoriented the building toward the city. Inside, a sculptural staircase and new skylit volumes connected previously fragmented wings, while a four-storey south addition overlooking Grange Park expanded gallery and event space using custom titanium-and-glass panels.\u00a0<\/p>\n Gehry remained professionally active. His team was finalizing a 1,000-seat concert hall for the Colburn School of Music in Los Angeles. In Beverly Hills, he was completing an 82,000 ft\u00b2 Louis Vuitton flagship for Bernard Arnault, while a separate Paris commission involved converting a 1960s structure into an exhibition and events venue.\u00a0<\/p>\n Over seven decades, Gehry broadened the possibilities of architectural form and challenged conventions.
