{"id":33823,"date":"2026-01-07T13:03:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T21:03:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/ontario-approves-new-underwater-transmission-line-to-downtown-toronto\/"},"modified":"2026-01-07T13:03:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T21:03:11","slug":"ontario-approves-new-underwater-transmission-line-to-downtown-toronto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/ontario-approves-new-underwater-transmission-line-to-downtown-toronto\/","title":{"rendered":"Ontario approves new underwater transmission line to downtown Toronto"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">TORONTO \u2013\u202fThe Ontario government is taking a deep dive,\u00a0approving\u00a0the Independent Electricity System Operator\u2019s (IESO) recommendation to build a new underwater electricity transmission line from near the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station\u00a0in Bowmanville, Ont.\u00a0to the downtown core and eastern\u00a0portion\u00a0of Toronto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0first-of-its-kind high-voltage underwater transmission line in Ontario\u00a0is being constructed\u00a0in order to\u00a0keep\u00a0up with growth as electricity demand in Toronto is expected to double by 2050, a release reads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Currently, the City of Toronto is supplied by two transmission lines, one from the west at Manby Transmission Station (TS) and one from the east at Leaside TS. These pathways will begin to reach their capacity in the 2030s.\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/canada.constructconnect.com\/dcn\/news\/infrastructure\/2025\/06\/ontario-toronto-building-third-transmission-line-to-power-the-citys-downtown\" target=\"_blank\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The\u00a0third transmission line\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">will\u00a0deliver\u00a0900 MW of\u00a0additional\u00a0power, equivalent to all the power generated from three small modular reactors, or power for 900,000 new homes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With news of the approval, the\u00a0government is proposing the IESO\u00a0launch\u00a0a competitive procurement process to select a transmitter, which will be informed by a consultation on\u00a0the procurement\u00a0design.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The province\u00a0states\u00a0the reason for an underwater line is because it\u00a0is less vulnerable to extreme weather events such as flooding or ice storms.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe underwater cable will also deliver more capacity than any other option and meet the system needs beyond 2044, reducing the need for additional, costly upgrades and expansions,\u201d the release notes. \u201cThe\u202fthird line will also alleviate strain on the bulk power system by avoiding bulk system reinforcements elsewhere in the GTA which could result in an estimated preliminary savings of $100\u00a0to\u00a0$300 million.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The development,\u00a0construction\u00a0and commissioning could take between seven to 10 years to complete.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The IESO\u2019s recommendation follows analysis of multiple options, prioritizing routes that minimize land-use\u00a0impacts\u00a0by\u00a0leveraging\u00a0existing corridors, underground infrastructure and pathways, the release adds.
