A team from SCS will drive a 4.5-mile twin-bore tunnel linking Old Oak Common to Euston using two tunnel boring machines, Karen and Madeleine. <\/p>\n
The first machine, TBM Madeleine, will be launched on the upline next week, with the second machine, TBM Karen, following around a month later on the downline. <\/p>\n
Once fully operational, the TBMs are expected to advance at rates of up to 150m a week, reaching depths of up to 50m.<\/p>\n
Both machines are due to arrive beneath the Euston approaches in June 2027.<\/p>\n
Once the main tunnel drives are complete, the TBMs will be dismantled in the underground cavern beneath Parkway junction and removed in sections by lorry.<\/p>\n
Funding is currently in place to complete the tunnels just before Euston, but the final design and funding decision for the stretches of tunnel into a rebuilt Euston station have to be confirmed.<\/p>\n
These will be hand-dug with sprayed concrete lining. One tunnel is planned to split into two, creating a three-tunnel configuration.<\/p>\n
This layout will provide two tunnels for arriving services and one for departures, allowing flexibility in how trains are routed into Euston platforms. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
