For small and medium-sized businesses and independent contractors, it has become a daily operational challenge. In short, finding experienced project managers, site supervisors, and construction leaders is becoming increasingly difficult, even as workloads grow.

As an international leading professional body for construction management and leadership, the CIOB’s role is not limited to supporting larger organizations. We’re also proud to help people working in smaller businesses. We know these firms are the backbone of Canada’s construction sector. Recently, we signed a memorandum of understanding with the Canadian Construction Association (CCA). While this may sound like a box-ticking exercise, it’s actually a very practical and timely solution, which I believe more contractors should be paying attention to.

This agreement provides a pathway between CIOB membership and the CCA Gold Seal Certification (GSC) Program, making it easier to recognize qualified professionals, whether they are new to Canada or building their careers here. Many contractors already employ internationally trained professionals with strong technical and managerial skills. However, the most significant hurdle to obtaining Gold Seal Certification has long been proving local work experience before certification becomes possible. Under this new agreement, individuals holding the MCIOB designation will have their education recognized as meeting the Gold Seal education requirement.

For contractors, this is a game-changer. It means internationally qualified professionals can move more quickly toward Gold Seal certification, giving employers greater confidence in their competence and professionalism – eradicating the delay under the former system. At a time when the industry is facing significant labour shortages, this removes some of the red tape from the hiring process and will allow contractors to access a much wider pool of talent.

The agreement also benefits contractors investing in their existing teams. Canadian construction professionals who hold Gold Seal Certification will now be recognized by CIOB as meeting the requirements for Applicant or TechCIOB membership. If you’re not already aware of CIOB, you might be wondering why or how this benefits you. Put simply, CIOB accreditation – particularly MCIOB – is internationally recognized and signals high standards in construction management and leadership. Contractors who have ambitions to expand internationally, bid on global projects, or simply want to keep their most talented workers can now offer their employees a much clearer pathway to globally recognized credentials. As we all know, supporting professional development is one of the most effective ways to retain skilled staff.

It’s worth highlighting this agreement is not about lowering the bar to achieve Gold Seal or MCIOB. Both CIOB and CCA maintain their own certification standards, rules, and processes. All applicable fees, ethics requirements and assessments will still apply. What has changed is that instead of asking professionals to prove the same competence twice, the industry is recognizing equivalent standards and trusted credentials. For contractors, that means less uncertainty and more transparency when assessing qualifications.

This MoU is just the first of several initiatives planned between CIOB and CCA to strengthen professionalism and best practice across the entire Canadian construction sector. This growing partnership will see us focus on how we can improve management and leadership across the industry, not just technical delivery. As construction projects become more complex and margins continue to get tighter, we all know that strong management is no longer optional. I am sure you will agree with me that recognizing and developing professional competence is essential to staying competitive in the current market.

In summary, for contractors struggling with today’s industry challenges, this agreement provides a practical, immediate benefit with long-term value. It helps you hire better, develop your people, and position your business for the future – whether that be here in Canada or further beyond. In my view, that’s an outcome worth building on.

[ad_2]

This article was originally posted at Source link

[ad_1] January 29, 2026 By Sereena Kang, Regional Manager Americas, Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) The skills shortage across the … Read more

[1090
1091
post-34098","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-canadian-contractor","tag-canada","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-33
["GET
