{"id":34314,"date":"2026-02-15T14:38:15","date_gmt":"2026-02-15T22:38:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/salford-set-for-record-525m-wastewater-reset\/"},"modified":"2026-02-15T14:38:15","modified_gmt":"2026-02-15T22:38:15","slug":"salford-set-for-record-525m-wastewater-reset","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/salford-set-for-record-525m-wastewater-reset\/","title":{"rendered":"Salford set for record \u00a3525m wastewater reset"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The integrated team will spearhead a \u00a3525m programme to modernise wastewater assets across the city over the next five years \u2013 slashing storm overflows, boosting resilience and tightening environmental performance.<\/p>\n<p>At the heart of the push are two flagship treatment works upgrades.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_505594\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2026-02-11-at-20.17.41.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-505594 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2026-02-11-at-20.17.41.png\" alt=\"-\" width=\"894\" height=\"598\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Two-phase Salford wastewater treatment works plan<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Salford wastewater treatment works is in line for a \u00a3225m revamp, introducing a new process to strip out more ammonia and phosphorus before treated flows discharge into the Manchester Ship Canal.<\/p>\n<p>The firms carrying out the work include Volker and Jacobs.<\/p>\n<p>Given the limited space available for development at Salford, demolition of five of the existing trickling filters will be required to free up land for construction.<\/p>\n<p>The works will have to be constructed in two phases; phase one on the contaminated land area which, once commissioned, will provide sufficient process capacity to release an element of the exiting tricking filter beds for construction.<\/p>\n<p>Eccles wastewater treatment works will see an even bigger \u00a3302m investment.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2026-02-13-at-07.35.11.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-505653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2026-02-13-at-07.35.11.png\" alt=\"-\" width=\"1588\" height=\"1150\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Firms set to deliver this project include Murphy, Kier and MMB. Plans include a 60,000m3 underground storage tank \u2013 equivalent to 24 Olympic-sized swimming pools \u2013 alongside a new pumping station, screening plant and odour control systems.<\/p>\n<p>The extra storage will ease pressure on the network during heavy rainfall and cut spills to Salteye Brook and the Manchester Ship Canal.<\/p>\n<p>The Eccles scheme comes on top of works already underway near the M60 at Liverpool Road, where a 5,700m3 underground tank is being built. Sewer capacity at Peel Green Road will also be boosted to lower local flood risk.<\/p>\n<p>Environmental Impact Assessment screening requests have been lodged with Salford Council for both treatment works upgrades.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Borradaile, Wastewater Services Director at United Utilities, said: \u201cWe know how important improving water quality across the North West is to our customers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why we\u2019re working at pace to deliver schemes like these across the region.
