TORONTO \u2014 Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and\u00a0the\u00a0Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Gaming (MTCG) have awarded a contract of\u00a0$1.04 billion\u00a0to Ontario Science Partners to design, build, finance and\u00a0maintain\u00a0a new Ontario Science Centre facility.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The project team includes:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n To be\u00a0located\u00a0on the mainland of Ontario Place, the new\u00a0centre\u00a0will include the\u00a0preservation of the\u00a0Cinesphere\u00a0and Pod complex, a\u00a0release\u00a0notes.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The\u202fnew\u202f400,000-square-foot facility\u202fwill include interactive exhibits and an improved and upgraded\u00a0Cinesphere, with more space dedicated to programming than at the previous site.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n IO and MTCG selected Ontario Science Partners\u00a0after a\u00a0procurement process that began in May 2024. Selection criteria included\u00a0the\u00a0evaluation of\u00a0a\u00a0proposed design, technical\u00a0submission\u00a0and price to<\/span>\u202f<\/span>deliver<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the project.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The process started after the provincial government\u00a0deemed\u00a0the former\u00a0<\/span>Ontario Science Centre site at 770 Don Mills Rd. unsafe\u00a0<\/span><\/a>for public use in a highly controversial decision in the summer of 2024.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n A\u00a0report from professional engineers found \u201cserious structural deficiencies\u201d with the roof of the building\u00a0and it was also reaching the end of its useful life, experts\u00a0stated.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In December 2025, the Ontario government\u202f<\/span>announced<\/span><\/a>\u202fHarbourfront\u00a0Centre will serve as the interim home for the Ontario Science Centre until the new permanent facility is completed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Ontario Science Partners will\u00a0now\u00a0begin mobilizing\u00a0onsite\u00a0and construction is expected to start in the coming weeks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The science\u00a0centre\u00a0is slated for completion in\u00a02029.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The province says it \u201cwill be a cornerstone of the revitalized Ontario Place, providing new experiences for families, creating more than 1,000 jobs in the construction and tourism sectors, and boosting economic growth across Toronto and the region.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Final designs for the new Ontario Place were<\/span>\u00a0unveiled in June 2025\u00a0<\/span><\/a>and\u00a0<\/span>feature more than\u00a050 acres\u00a0of free public trails, expanded green space, playgrounds, interactive fountains, new beaches, event spaces, a modernized marina and\u00a0<\/span>the redesigned RBC Amphitheatre.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The Ontario Place and science\u00a0centre\u00a0plans coincide with\u00a0a new waterpark and wellness facility\u00a0by\u00a0Therme\u00a0Canada\u00a0at Ontario Place\u2019s West Island.
