{"id":34569,"date":"2026-03-07T01:45:14","date_gmt":"2026-03-07T09:45:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/nrc-approves-construction-of-advanced-nuclear-reactor-in-wyoming\/"},"modified":"2026-03-07T01:45:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-07T09:45:14","slug":"nrc-approves-construction-of-advanced-nuclear-reactor-in-wyoming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/nrc-approves-construction-of-advanced-nuclear-reactor-in-wyoming\/","title":{"rendered":"NRC approves construction of advanced nuclear reactor in Wyoming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued its first <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nrc.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/cdn\/doc-collection-news\/2026\/26-028.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">commercial nuclear reactor construction permit<\/a> in nearly 10 years Wednesday to a <span><span><span><span><span><span>subsidiary of Bill Gates\u2019 TerraPower for a 345-MW plant planned near the site of a retiring coal plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Kemmerer Power Station Unit 1 will be the first utility-scale advanced nuclear power plant in the U.S., <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/nrc-approves-the-natrium-reactor-construction-permit-302704125.html\" target=\"_blank\">TerraPower said in a release<\/a>,\u00a0and will <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.utilitydive.com\/news\/terrapower-smr-advanced-nuclear-reactor-bill-gates\/718722\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>supply power to PacifiCorp\u2019s grid<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>, with completion anticipated in 2030.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The NRC said that after a streamlined mandatory hearing process, it authorized its Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation to issue the permit, \u201chaving found the staff\u2019s review of the Kemmerer application adequate to make the necessary regulatory safety and environmental findings. The staff expects to issue the permit soon.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Kemmerer Power Station Unit 1 is being developed through the Department of Energy&#8217;s Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program, TerraPower said. It uses a design called Natrium, a \u201csodium-cooled fast reactor with a patented molten salt-based energy storage system,\u201d which TerraPower co-developed with GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The storage element can boost the system&#8217;s output to 500 MW of power when needed \u201cto keep base output steady, ensuring constant reliability, and can quickly ramp up when demand peaks,\u201d said TerraPower.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.utilitydive.com\/news\/meta-nuclear-deal-oklo-vistra-terrapower-ai-data-centers\/809215\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>TerraPower and Meta announced a deal last month<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span> that Meta would help fund the development of and receive power from two new Natrium units with 690 MW of capacity, with delivery as early as 2032.
