Morgan Sindall has finally broken ground on the new complex, with activity on site set to ramp up in the coming weeks and completion expected in late 2027.<\/p>\n
The project replaces the former West Denton pool built in the 1960s, which shut during the pandemic and never reopened.<\/p>\n
The new leisure centre will feature an eight-lane 25m swimming pool, a 17m training pool, sports hall, gym, library and sauna and steam rooms.<\/p>\n
Cllr Alex Hay said: \u201cThe project was delayed and costs rose, but the council never wavered in its commitment to seeing this come to fruition. It\u2019s the first council owned leisure centre and pool to be built in Newcastle for 26 years so it\u2019s quite a moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
Alex Isted, area director for Morgan Sindall North East and Cumbria, said: \u201cOur team is looking forward to the next stage as we bring this important asset to life for all stakeholders.\u201d<\/p>\n
Funding for the scheme includes nearly \u00a320m from the Government\u2019s Levelling Up Fund, \u00a32.5m from Sport England and a further \u00a32m contribution from North East Mayor Kim McGuinness. <\/p>\n
Newcastle City Council is funding the remaining balance through community infrastructure levy receipts, reserves and prudential borrowing.<\/p>\n
