In Toronto’s Stockyards neighbourhood, work is slowly progressing on the delivery of a new transit station at the intersection of St Clair Avenue West and Old Weston Road. Initially proposed as part of the SmartTrack infill GO station plan, St Clair-Old Weston station<\/a> has since had its proposed service delivery shifted away from GO Transit operations to Union Pearson Express.<\/p>\n First proposed in 2014 as a part of then mayoral candidate John Tory’s SmartTrack plan, St Clair-Old Weston station sought to use the existing GO Transit network to provide faster transit for the poorly connected neighbourhoods of the Stockyards and Carleton Village to the west and east respectively. While nominally close to Downtown, these areas’ lack of rapid transit or highway connections meant residents’ commutes to the core would involve a thirty-minute drive or an almost hour-long trip on the TTC.<\/p>\n The construction of an infill GO station promised travel times to Union Station in the range of only fifteen minutes on a road-traffic-free, one-seat ride. This dramatic improvement in travel times could be paired with the facilitation of a more transit-oriented and urbane redevelopment of the remaining industrial and commercial lands in the surroundings.<\/p>\n Following Tory’s election, the SmartTrack plan was down-scoped as its costs became better understood; its separate service plan was deleted, and it only persists now as a handful of new infill stations on the GO network. It would take nearly a decade following this station’s initial proposal for a design-build contract to be awarded by Metrolinx to Grascan Construction Ltd in 2022. The design and delivery of the new station houses and two platforms were projected to take around four years, with service set to open to the public in December 2026.<\/p>\n By July 2023, the project had achieved 90% design, with planning and architectural documents being submitted to the City of Toronto earlier that same year. By this point in 2023, the projected in-service date for the station had been pushed back nearly three years, with a new target of March 2029.<\/p>\n Since then, essentially no visible progress has been made on the station buildings, two new platforms, or station entrances set to be located on St Clair Avenue West, Union Street, and Gunns Road. While the planned four tracks are in place throughout the station corridor, this has not been followed by any work other than seemingly minor grade levelling and refreshing of rail ballast.<\/p>\n In the midst of this failure for major work to get underway, an announcement was made in late 2025 detailing drastic servicing changes to the future station. Initially planned to be served by the Kitchener GO line and enjoy connections to Union Station, Brampton, and Kitchener, Metrolinx changed course and stated that St Clair-Old Weston station would be serviced by the Union Pearson Express service only.<\/p>\n While this will provide all-day, two-way, 15-minute service for riders immediately upon the station’s opening, it also diminishes the neighbourhood’s and future density node’s regional connectivity. The Union Pearson Express, as its name suggests, travels only between Pearson International Airport and Union Station, with intermediarte stops at Bloor Street, Eglinton (Mount Dennis), and Lawrence Avenues (Weston). Additionally, the serving of St Clair-Old Weston by the UPX, alongside another planned stop at Woodbine, casts doubt over just how “express” the airport link service will remain.<\/p>\n Unlike a number of other significant station infill projects, there does seem to be a desire by Metrolinx to see St Clair-Old Weston station to completion, with a public notice of track work being distributed in late March, 2026. The notice describes the construction being undertaken as “early work,” primarily related to the diversion of tracks for future work and the raising of temporary construction barriers.<\/p>\n As St Clair-Old Weston station stretches into its twelfth year of planning and preparatory work, following an already multi-year targeted completion setback, it remains unclear when riders will be able to use the station.
