TORONTO \u2013 A location and vision for a new \u201chigh-performance\u201d training facility and community recreation hub at 701 Fleet St., just outside the Princes\u2019 Gates at Exhibition Place, has been unveiled. <\/span><\/p>\n

According to a release, the City of Toronto will partner with the Toronto Tempo, Canada\u2019s first Women\u2019s National Basketball Association (WNBA) team, to develop a \u201cworld-class training centre that will also serve as a year-round public recreation facility.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It will be located near the team\u2019s home court at Coca-Cola Coliseum and comes as the Tempo prepare to launch their inaugural season this spring.<\/span><\/p>\n

In exchange for a proposed long-term lease on city-owned land identified by CreateTO, the Toronto Tempo will deliver the facility while also assuming responsibility for maintenance, the release notes. Through lease terms to be approved by Toronto City Council, the city will secure at least 2,200 hours of annual access for community programming, including use of the gym, training spaces and multi-purpose rooms. <\/span><\/p>\n

The site is currently an underutilized parking lot.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pending council approval, construction is expected to begin this fall, with completion anticipated in 2028.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Toronto Tempo is a women-led organization with an ownership group that includes Kilmer Sports Ventures, Serena Williams, Masai Ujiri and Lilly Singh.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
