TORONTO \u2014 Humber Polytechnic has reason to celebrate.<\/p>\n
The school was recently honoured with three golds and one bronze national Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) Awards of Excellence<\/a>, including two awards recognizing institutional and student leadership related to sustainable construction and engineering.<\/p>\n The CICan Awards celebrate innovation, leadership and impact across Canada\u2019s public college and institute system.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Those two awards were presented to Spencer Wood, Humber\u2019s director of facilities management, and Samara Ocansey, a\u00a0\u00a0fourth-year\u00a0student in Humber\u2019s bachelor of engineering \u2013 sustainable building engineering<\/a>\u00a0program.<\/p>\n According to a release, Wood has led more than\u00a050 campus sustainability initiatives, including Humber\u2019s NX Passive House<\/a>\u00a0<\/u>retrofit\u00a0and Project Switch<\/a>, which have reduced natural gas use and carbon emissions at Humber\u2019s North Campus by 70 per cent. <\/p>\n These efforts have helped put Humber on track to meet its\u00a0net-zero target by 2029.<\/p>\n Ocansey, who plans to design energy efficient, environmentally responsible buildings after graduation, was recognized for academic excellence, peer leadership and inclusive mentorship.<\/p>\n As founder of\u00a0Humber\u2019s Women in Engineering Club, she is a passionate advocate for women in STEM, the release adds.
