TORONTO\u00a0\u2014 Unity Health Toronto\u2019s new ambulatory care centre at St. Michael\u2019s emergency department is now officially open to patients.<\/p>\n
The hospital\u2019s historic Shuter Wing has been renovated to create an expanded space that will serve more than 70,000 walk-in patients every year, states a release.<\/p>\n
In 2023, St. Michael\u2019s started the project to replace the 100-year-old wing, located on the northeast end of the hospital, with a new building at the corner of Bond and Shuter streets. The interior and structural demolition was completed in the spring of 2023.<\/p>\n
Construction commenced shortly after.<\/p>\n
The new centre includes a dedicated walk-in entrance, a separate waiting area for ambulatory patients, private exam rooms, a confidential discharge suite and a centralized caregiver pod.<\/p>\n
The project was supported by the Province of Ontario\u2019s $204 million investment and is one part of the St. Michael\u2019s Hospital\u2019s Peter Gilgan Patient Care Tower project.<\/p>\n
The project includes five new purpose-built operating rooms and enlarged facilities for orthopedic surgery, oncology, coronary care and respirology.<\/p>\n
Ontario is also investing over $15 million to support Unity Health Toronto with the planning, design and implementation of its relocated\u00a0Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)<\/a>\u00a0at St. Michael\u2019s.<\/p>\n The new facility, which will be completed by summer 2027, will see over 12,000 square feet of space renovated, and the entire NICU unit of bassinets will be relocated to a larger space at the new patient care tower at St. Michael\u2019s Hospital.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
