Davie <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.davie.ca\/en\/news\/davie-defense-closes-gulf-copper-acquisition-confirming-u-s-shipbuilding-expansion\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>acquired Gulf Copper and its assets<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span> in December 2025 for an undisclosed amount.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>The upgrades are expected to create about 2,400 jobs and support up to 7,000 workers through the supply chain and other related \u201ceconomic activities.\u201d\u00a0 The first phase of the upgrades is scheduled for completion in 2028.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Dive Insight:<\/h3>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The upcoming factory is part of Davie\u2019s <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2026\/05\/13\/coast-guard-finalizes-contract-five-new-arctic-security-cutters\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>$3.5 billion contract with the U.S. Coast Guard<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span> to build and deliver five polar icebreaker vessels called Arctic Security Cutters, which was finalized on May 13.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Two of the ships will be built at Davie\u2019s affiliate Helsinki Shipyard in Finland, according to the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/28182101-20261305-davie-defense-asc\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>company\u2019s May press release<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>. The remaining three ships will be constructed at Davie\u2019s Gulf Copper facilities in Galveston and Port Arthur. The first ship delivery is expected in 2028 and the contract runs through February 2035.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The award was funded through the agency\u2019s $25 billion fiscal year 2025 budget reconciliation, as part of the Coast Guard\u2019s commitment to improve acquisition and launch new technologies to revamp U.S. shipbuilding, the Department of Homeland Security stated in the press release.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the deal supports the Coast Guard\u2019s modernization under its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uscg.mil\/leadership\/commandants-initiatives\/forcedesign2028\/\" target=\"_blank\">Force Design 2028<\/a>\u00a0strategy, which aims to strengthen the agency\u2019s operations and fighting capabilities, according to a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news.uscg.mil\/Press-Releases\/Article\/4403354\/us-coast-guard-completes-the-presidents-contract-awards-for-11-arctic-security\/\" target=\"_blank\">December 2025 press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Davie\u2019s contract is one of 11 that the Coast Guard has awarded to acquire ASCs, which will be used to secure critical shipping lanes and protect energy and mineral resources in the Arctic region.
