The traditional hard hat, a plastic shell on a strap suspension, has protected tradespeople for generations. But it was designed for one job: stopping objects that fall on top of your head. Many of the head injuries we see on construction sites come from somewhere else: a fall from a ladder, a swinging load, or walking into a beam.

That’s why more contractors are moving to Type 2 safety helmets, which are tested for impacts from the side, front and back as well as the top. OSHA switched its own inspectors to Type 2 helmets in 2023, and many Canadian construction sites now require them with chin straps. Traditional hard hats are still allowed on most sites, and they still have a place.

To find the best hard hats for construction, we compared eight of the most popular hard hats and safety helmets, from a $15 full brim to a $140 Type 2 helmet. Below you’ll find our picks, a plain-English guide to hard hat types and classes, and answers to the questions we hear most on site.

Quick answer: Type 1 or Type 2?

Type 1 hard hats protect against impacts to the top of your head. Type 2 hard hats and safety helmets also protect against impacts to the front, back and sides, and they usually come with a chin strap that keeps them on when you fall. Both meet OSHA’s requirements, but Type 2 offers more protection.

If you work at height, around moving equipment, or anywhere you could slip, trip or fall, choose Type 2. If you work near electrical hazards, choose Class E (non-vented). Our overall pick, the Milwaukee BOLT Type 2, covers most construction work. Electricians should look at the Klein 60564, and if you just need a reliable traditional hard hat, the MSA V-Gard is still the classic.

Our top picks at a glance

Pick

Hard hat

Rating

Style

Best overall

Milwaukee BOLT Type 2

Type 2, Class C (E available)

Helmet, front brim

Most protective

Studson SHK-1

Type 2, Class C (E available)

Helmet, full brim

Best for electricians

Klein Tools 60564

Type 2, Class E

Low-profile helmet

Best Type 2 full brim

MSA V-Gard H2

Type 2, Class C (E available)

Helmet, full brim

Best classic hard hat

MSA V-Gard Cap

Type 1, Class E

Cap style

Best budget

Pyramex Ridgeline

Type 1, Class E

Full brim

Most comfortable full brim

Fibre-Metal SuperEight

Type 1, Class E

Full brim

Best for work at height

Kask Superplasma HD

Type 1, Class C

Climbing helmet

Price guide: $ under $40, $$ $40–100, $$$ over $100. class="ec-pick__take">
Milwaukee took the same approach to head protection that it took to cordless tools: build a solid core product, then surround it with accessories that click on and off. The BOLT Type 2 helmet is the result, and it's the one we'd hand most people on a commercial site today.

It's certified to ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 Type 2, which means it's tested for impacts to the top, front, back and sides of the head, not just the crown. That matters more than most people think. Plenty of head injuries on site come from falls, swinging loads and walking into steel, not only from objects dropped from above. A Type 2 helmet with a chin strap also stays on your head when you go down, which a traditional hard hat often doesn't.

This version is vented, which keeps air moving on hot days. The trade-off is the electrical rating: vented shells are Class C, which means no electrical protection. If you work near energized equipment, buy the non-vented BOLT Type 2, which is rated Class E.

The suspension is padded and adjusts with a swing-wheel ratchet at the back. The sweatband and liner are antimicrobial, removable and machine washable, which you'll appreciate by August. A multi-point adjustable chin strap comes in the box.

The BOLT system is the real reason to choose this helmet. The shell has dedicated BOLT accessory slots plus universal slots, so you can run Milwaukee's headlamps, hearing protection, face shields, visors and marker clips without straps or tape. If your crew already runs Milwaukee tools and batteries, the rechargeable BOLT lights are a natural fit.

It costs more than a basic hard hat, and the accessories add up. But if you want modern Type 2 protection from a brand you can find at any supply house, this is the safest default choice.

Pros

Type 2 rated for top and side impacts

Chin strap included

BOLT and universal slots for lights, earmuffs and visors

Washable antimicrobial liner and sweatband

Easy to find at supply houses and big-box stores

Cons

Vented version is Class C (no electrical protection)

Costs several times more than a basic hard hat

Accessories work best within Milwaukee's own system

Brand

Milwaukee

Impact type

Type 2 (top and side)

Electrical class

C (vented); Class E non-vented version available

Style

Front brim helmet

Chin strap

Included

Vented

Yes

2. Instead of relying only on a plastic shell and a strap suspension, it uses a Koroyd core: a layer of thin welded tubes that crush in a controlled way to absorb impact energy. Studson also uses Brainshield pads, which are designed to reduce the twisting and compression your brain takes in an impact.

The SHK-1 is certified to ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 Type II, so it's tested for side, front and rear impacts as well as top impacts. The full brim version has also earned dual certification to the Canadian CSA Z94.1 standard, which makes it one of the few full brim Type 2 helmets that works on both sides of the border. That's worth knowing now that many Canadian construction sites require Type 2 helmets with chin straps.

The full brim gives you real shade for your face, ears and neck, which most Type 2 helmets don't. Climbing-style helmets usually have a short bill or no brim at all.

Every SHK-1 includes a twICEme NFC chip. A first responder can tap it with a phone to pull up your emergency contacts and medical information. It's a small feature, but on a large site with a lot of workers, it can save time when it matters most.

The helmet fits heads from 53 to 63 cm and weighs about 525 g according to Studson, light for the protection it offers. The vented model we link to is Class C. If you need electrical protection, Studson sells a non-vented SHK-1 rated Class E.

The catch is price. At well over $100, it's one of the most expensive helmets here. If your company supplies helmets, it's a tough sell for a whole crew. If you're buying your own and want the best protection you can get with a full brim, it's worth the money.

Pros

Koroyd core and Brainshield pads designed to absorb impact energy

Type II with a full brim for sun and rain

Full brim model certified to both ANSI and CSA

NFC chip stores emergency and medical info

Light for the protection, about 525 g

Cons

Expensive

Vented version is Class C (no electrical protection)

Fits 53–63 cm, so very large heads may need another option

Brand

Studson

Impact type

Type II (top and side)

Electrical class

C (vented); Class E non-vented version available

Style

Full brim helmet

Chin strap

Included

Weight

About 525 g (manufacturer)

Fit range

53–63 cm

3. It's a non-vented Type 2 helmet rated Class E, which means the shell is proof-tested to 20,000 volts. If you work around live panels, switchgear or overhead lines, Class E is the rating you need. The Type 2 rating adds side, front and rear impact protection on top of that.

The 60564 is compact. Klein designed it for work at height and in confined spaces, with a low-profile shell and a short bill that doesn't block your view when you look up at a panel or cable tray. It's a good fit for crawl spaces, ceilings and lifts, where a big brim gets in the way.

The 6-point suspension adjusts with a ratchet knob and pivots for a better fit. The chin strap is removable, so you can take it off where your site allows. Klein says the helmet stays stable even when you tilt your head, which matches what owners report. The padded sweatband and top pad wick sweat and go in the washing machine.

Klein's patented accessory mounts on the front and back let you click a Klein headlamp on without straps. Side slots take hearing protection, visors and face shields. If you want the light included, Klein sells the same helmet with a rechargeable headlamp as the 60525.

It's certified to ANSI Z89.1-2014 (R2019) and CSA Z94.1-2015, so it works on Canadian sites too.

The downsides come with the design. There's almost no brim, so it gives little shade or rain cover. And because it's non-vented, it runs warmer than vented helmets in summer. For electrical work, that's the right trade.

Pros

Class E (20 kV) and Type 2 in one helmet

Compact, low-profile shell for ceilings, lifts and confined spaces

Click-in headlamp mounts, no straps needed

6-point suspension with removable chin strap

ANSI and CSA certified

Cons

Short bill gives little sun or rain protection

Non-vented shell runs warm in summer

Headlamp sold separately unless you buy the 60525

Brand

Klein Tools

Impact type

Type 2 (top and side)

Electrical class

E (tested to 20,000 V)

Style

Low-profile helmet

Chin strap

Included, removable

Suspension

6-point ratchet

Standards

ANSI Z89.1-2014 (R2019), CSA Z94.1-2015

4. The V-Gard H2 keeps the full brim shape crews already know, and adds what a traditional hard hat is missing: protection from the side.

The H2 is certified to ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 Type II. Inside the ABS shell is an EPS foam liner that absorbs energy from top and lateral impacts. MSA designed the liner so it doesn't sit flat against your head, which leaves room for air to move. The vented version we link to adds airflow through the shell. It's rated Class C, so it offers no electrical protection. The non-vented H2 is rated Class E.

An integrated 4-point chin strap keeps the helmet on during slips, trips and falls. A Type 2 helmet only works if it stays on, so we're glad MSA built the strap in rather than selling it as an add-on.

The ratchet suspension adjusts in small steps with a gloved hand, without taking the helmet off. It fits heads from about 53 to 63 cm. MSA lists the non-vented white model at about 0.5 kg, a little heavier than a cap-style hard hat but in line with other Type 2 helmets. The sweatband, crown pad and ratchet pad have an antimicrobial treatment.

The H2 works with nearly all existing V-Gard full brim accessories. If your company already stocks V-Gard earmuffs, face shields or sun shades, you can switch to Type 2 without replacing all of them. That makes it the easiest upgrade path for a fleet.

It's a newer model, so there are fewer owner reviews than for MSA's classic hard hats. A full brim also catches more wind and can get in the way in tight spaces. For most outdoor crews moving to Type 2, though, it's the best value full brim option we found. A version with the Mips brain protection system is also available.

Pros

Type II side impact protection in a familiar full brim

Integrated 4-point chin strap

Works with nearly all V-Gard full brim accessories

Ratchet adjusts easily with gloves on

Less expensive than most Type 2 helmets

Cons

Vented version is Class C (non-vented is Class E)

Heavier than a cap-style hard hat

Newer model with fewer owner reviews

Brand

MSA

Impact type

Type II (top and side)

Electrical class

C (vented); Class E non-vented version available

Style

Full brim helmet

Chin strap

Integrated 4-point

Liner

EPS foam

Fit range

53–63 cm

5. It's the shape most people picture when they hear "hard hat," and with more than 3,000 Amazon ratings averaging 4.5 stars, it's still one of the most popular.

The shell is high-density polyethylene with a UV inhibitor to slow sun damage. It's a Type I, Class E hard hat certified to ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 and CSA Z94.1. Type I means it's designed for impacts to the top of the head. Class E means the shell is proof-tested to 20,000 volts for electrical protection. The slotted cap weighs well under a pound, so it's easy to wear all day.

The Fas-Trac III suspension is the best part. It's MSA's top ratchet suspension, redesigned with input from users. Flush rear attachment points remove the pressure points that older suspensions caused at the back of the head. The nape strap has three height settings, so you can get the hat to sit level instead of tipping forward. The ratchet pad is contoured and comfortable.

The shell is slotted for MSA's huge range of accessories, more than 100 in all: earmuffs, face shields, sun shades, winter liners, lamp brackets and more. Replacement 4-point and 6-point Fas-Trac III suspensions are easy to find, so you can replace the suspension every year without buying a new shell.

The limits are the ones that come with any traditional hard hat. It's Type I only, so it isn't rated for side impacts. There's no chin strap in the box, so it can fall off in a slip or when you look up. And a cap style gives no shade for your neck and ears.

If your site still allows Type I hard hats, or you need a reliable spare for visitors and new hires, the V-Gard is hard to beat for the money.

Pros

Proven design, one of the most widely used hard hats

Class E electrical protection

Fas-Trac III ratchet with three nape strap settings

Slotted for more than 100 MSA accessories

Inexpensive and easy to replace

Cons

Type I only (no side impact rating)

No chin strap included

Cap style gives no neck or ear shade

Brand

MSA

Impact type

Type I (top)

Electrical class

E

Style

Cap style hard hat

Suspension

Fas-Trac III 4-point ratchet

Shell

HDPE with UV inhibitor

Chin strap

Sold separately

6. It's easy to see why. You get a full brim hard hat with a ratchet suspension and an electrical rating for well under $40, and often under $20 in white.

The shell is high-density polyethylene. It meets ANSI Z89.1 Type 1 and is rated Class E, so it's proof-tested to 20,000 volts. The full brim shades your face, ears and neck and sends rain away from your collar, which makes it a popular choice for road crews, landscapers and anyone outside all day.

The standard version has a 4-point ratchet suspension that you can adjust while wearing the hat. Pyramex sells a 6-point suspension that converts the hat if you want a more stable fit. The brow pad, suspension and headband are all replaceable, so you can refresh the inside every year for a few dollars.

The Ridgeline also comes in a range of finishes, including matte and shiny graphite patterns that look like carbon fiber. They're popular because they look good, but they are standard polyethylene hard hats with a printed finish, not real carbon fiber. A vented version is available if you don't need the electrical rating.

It has the usual limits of a budget Type 1 hard hat. There's no side impact rating and no chin strap, and the 4-point suspension isn't as stable or as comfortable over a long shift as the 6- and 8-point suspensions on more expensive hats.

If your site now requires Type 2, Pyramex makes a separate Ridgeline T2 full brim with a 6-point suspension and an optional Mips liner. For a cheap, reliable Type 1 full brim, the standard Ridgeline is the one to buy.

Pros

Very low price

Full brim for sun and rain

Class E electrical rating

Convertible to 6-point suspension

Huge number of positive owner reviews

Cons

Type 1 only (no side impact rating)

4-point suspension is less stable than 6- or 8-point

No chin strap

Brand

Pyramex

Impact type

Type 1 (top)

Electrical class

E (also meets G and C)

Style

Full brim hard hat

Suspension

4-point ratchet (6-point upgrade available)

Shell

HDPE

Chin strap

Not included

7. The name comes from its suspension, and that's the reason to buy it.

Most budget hard hats use a 4-point suspension. The SuperEight uses eight load-bearing points. Spreading the hat's weight across more of your head makes it more stable and more comfortable over a long day. Honeywell calls it the SuperEight Impact Energy Control System. In an impact, the suspension breaks the force into smaller increments and spreads it over a larger area.

The suspension adjusts with a quick-turn ratchet knob that Fibre-Metal designs to be non-slip and strip-proof, so it holds its setting and lasts. It fits hat sizes from about 6½ to 8.

The shell is thermoplastic with Fibre-Metal's smooth crown design, which is meant to help deflect falling objects. Fibre-Metal says the thermoplastic shell is heat and scratch resistant. The full brim shades your face, ears and neck and keeps rain and falling debris off your shoulders.

It's a Type 1, Class E hard hat, so it's rated for top impacts and proof-tested to 20,000 volts. With more than 2,800 Amazon ratings averaging 4.6 stars, it's a proven choice.

Keep a few things in mind. The standard E1RW is non-slotted, so it doesn't take slot-mount earmuffs or face shields. If you need accessories, choose a slotted Fibre-Metal model. Like other traditional hard hats, it has no side impact rating and no chin strap. And it's a little heavier than a cap style.

If your site allows Type 1 and you spend all day outside in a full brim, the SuperEight is the most comfortable traditional hard hat on this list.

Pros

8-point suspension spreads weight and impact force

Non-slip, strip-proof ratchet

Heat and scratch-resistant thermoplastic shell

Full brim for sun, rain and debris

Class E electrical rating

Cons

Standard E1RW is non-slotted (no slot-mount accessories)

Type 1 only (no side impact rating)

No chin strap

Brand

Fibre-Metal (Honeywell)

Impact type

Type 1 (top)

Electrical class

E (also meets G and C)

Style

Full brim hard hat

Suspension

8-point ratchet

Shell

Thermoplastic

Accessory slots

No (non-slotted)

8. It's one of the most popular helmets among arborists, rope access workers and rescue teams, and it's catching on with tradespeople who work at height.

The Superplasma is light, at roughly 450 g, and very well ventilated. Ten air intakes with anti-intrusion grilles move air across your head while keeping out debris. On a hot roof or in a lift in July, that airflow makes a big difference.

The outer shell is ABS over a high-density polystyrene inner shell. Kask's Up&Down 2.0 fit system adapts to your head as you move, and the 2Dry padding is a quick-drying fabric that moves sweat away from your head. A chin strap is built in. The shell has attachment points for visors, headlamp clips and earmuffs.

Here's the important part. In North America, the Superplasma HD is certified to ANSI Z89.1 Type I, Class C. It also meets the European EN 12492 mountaineering helmet standard, which includes tests for shock absorption and chin strap strength. That makes it an excellent helmet for climbing and work at height, but under ANSI it's rated for top impacts only. It isn't a Type 2 helmet, even though it looks like one. And as a vented Class C helmet, it offers no electrical protection.

If your site requires Type 2, look at the Kask Zenith X2, which is Type II certified.

For work at height in hot weather, where weight, airflow and a secure chin strap matter most, the Superplasma HD is one of the most comfortable helmets you can wear. Just make sure its rating matches your site rules.

Pros

Light, about 450 g

Ten vents with anti-intrusion grilles

Built-in chin strap; meets EN 12492 for climbing

Up&Down fit system and quick-dry padding

Mounts for visors, lights and earmuffs

Cons

ANSI Type I only, despite the helmet styling

Class C (no electrical protection)

Expensive for a Type I helmet

Brand

Kask

Impact type

Type I (top)

Electrical class

C

Style

Climbing-style helmet

Chin strap

Included

Weight

About 450 g

Standards

ANSI Z89.1, CSA Z94.1, EN 12492

Also worth considering

These didn’t make our top eight, but they’re good helmets for the right job:

Petzl Vertex Vent (ANSI Type I, Class C). Then we compared them on the things that matter on site:

Certification: every pick meets ANSI/ISEA Z89.1. We checked the exact Type and Class for the model we link to, because many helmets come in vented (Class C) and non-vented (Class E) versions that look almost identical.

Protection: impact type, chin strap and liner design, including newer energy-absorbing systems.

Comfort: suspension points, ratchet adjustment, padding, weight and ventilation for a 10-hour day.

Practicality: brim style, accessory slots for lights, earmuffs and face shields, and how easy parts are to replace.

Owner feedback and value: recurring complaints across thousands of reviews, and what you get for the price.

Specs come from manufacturer documentation and listings. Where sources disagreed, we left the detail out or told you to check the label. We update this guide as models and site rules change.

How to choose a hard hat for construction

Type 1 vs Type 2: impact protection

Hard hats in the US are certified to ANSI/ISEA Z89.1, and every certified hard hat is marked with its Type.

Type 1 hard hats are tested for impacts to the top of the head and for penetration from above. This is the traditional hard hat. It protects you from a dropped tool or a falling bolt.

Type 2 hard hats and helmets pass the same top impact tests, plus tests for off-center impacts to the front, back and sides. Most use a foam liner (usually EPS) to absorb that energy, and most include a chin strap.

The difference matters because falls are one of the leading causes of death in construction. When you fall, the hard hat often comes off before your head hits anything. A Type 2 helmet with a chin strap stays on and protects the side of your head when you land.

In late 2023, OSHA published a Safety and Health Information Bulletin explaining the benefits of modern safety helmets and switched its own field staff to Type 2, Class G helmets. It’s guidance, not a new rule. You can still wear a Type 1 hard hat where your employer’s hazard assessment allows it. But the direction is clear, and many general contractors now require Type 2 on their sites. In Canada, members of the Canadian Construction Safety Council (CCSC) have required CSA or ANSI Type 2 helmets with integrated chin straps on their project sites since July 1, 2026. Ontario’s construction regulation will require Type 2 head protection where there’s a risk of side impact starting July 1, 2027.

Class G, E and C: electrical protection

The Class tells you how much electrical protection the shell gives you:

Class

Electrical test

Use it for

Class G (General)

Proof-tested at 2,200 volts

General construction with limited exposure to low-voltage conductors

Class E (Electrical)

Proof-tested at 20,000 volts

Electricians, utility work, anyone near energized equipment

Class C (Conductive)

Not tested; no electrical protection

Vented helmets where there’s no electrical hazard

Two things to know. First, these voltages are test ratings, not safe working limits. A Class E hard hat is a secondary layer of protection, not permission to work on live 20,000-volt equipment. Second, vents disqualify a shell from an electrical rating, so almost every vented hard hat is Class C. If you need Class E, buy the non-vented version.

Cap style, full brim or helmet

Cap style hard hats have a short front bill, like a baseball cap. They’re the lightest and easiest to wear in tight spaces, and the bill keeps sun out of your eyes. The MSA V-Gard is the classic example.

Full brim hard hats have a brim all the way around. It shades your face, ears and neck, sheds rain away from your collar, and gives some protection from material falling past the crown. They’re the favorite of road crews, ironworkers and anyone working outside. They’re also more likely to catch wind and bump into things in tight spaces.

Safety helmets (also called climbing-style helmets) look like a climbing or cycling helmet, with a short bill or none at all. Most are Type 2, with a foam liner and a chin strap. They’re the best option for work at height and the direction the industry is heading. The Studson SHK-1 and MSA V-Gard H2 combine a helmet with a full brim.

Suspension: the part you actually feel

The suspension is the harness inside the shell. It holds the hard hat on your head and keeps a gap between your skull and the shell so the hat can absorb an impact. It also decides whether you’ll want to wear the hat all day.

Number of points: 4-point suspensions are standard on budget hard hats. 6-point and 8-point suspensions spread the weight and impact force over more of your head, which makes the hat more stable and more comfortable over a long shift.

Ratchet vs pinlock: a ratchet knob at the back lets you tighten or loosen the fit while wearing the hat, even with gloves on. Pinlock suspensions use pins and holes and must be adjusted with the hat off. Ratchets cost a few dollars more and are worth it.

Padding: look for a soft, replaceable sweatband. Machine-washable liners make a real difference in summer.

Chin straps

A hard hat can’t protect you if it’s on the ground next to you. Chin straps keep it on when you look up, bend over, climb a ladder or fall. Type 2 helmets usually include one, and many sites now require them for work at height. You can add a chin strap to most traditional hard hats. Make sure it’s from the same manufacturer, since a mismatched strap may not attach securely.

Vented or non-vented

Vented hard hats are noticeably cooler in summer, which is not a small thing when heat illness is a real risk on site. But vents mean Class C, so no electrical protection. Some helmets have vents that you can close, but that doesn’t change the rating. If there’s any chance of electrical contact, choose a non-vented Class E shell.

Shell material

HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is the most common material. It’s light, tough and inexpensive. Look for a UV inhibitor, since sunlight breaks down polyethylene over time.

ABS and polycarbonate are common on Type 2 helmets. They’re rigid and take a good finish.

Thermoplastic and fiberglass hard hats handle heat better, which is why they’re popular for hot work like welding and paving.

Carbon fiber hard hats are popular for their looks. Many “carbon fiber” hard hats are actually plastic with a carbon pattern printed on, like the Ridgeline graphite finish. Real carbon fiber hats exist, but whatever the material, only buy one marked with ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 and a Type and Class.

Fit and size

Most hard hats fit hat sizes 6½ to 8 (about 53 to 63 cm). Small and large shells are available for heads outside that range. A good fit is snug but not tight: the hat shouldn’t move when you shake your head or bend over, and there should be a gap of about an inch between the top of your head and the shell. Adjust the nape strap so the hat sits level, not tipped back.

Accessories

If you need hearing protection, a face shield or a light, check the accessory system before you buy. Slotted hard hats take slot-mount earmuffs and face shields. Milwaukee (BOLT), Klein and MSA all have their own systems that click on without straps. Winter liners, sun shades and neck shades are available for most popular models.

Hard hat care, inspection and replacement

A hard hat is only as good as its condition. Here’s how to keep yours working:

Inspect it every day. Look for cracks, dents, gouges, chalky or faded plastic, and frayed or broken suspension straps. Press on the shell. If it feels brittle or creaks, replace it.

Replace it after any significant impact, even if you can’t see damage. The shell and suspension are designed to absorb one hit.

Follow the manufacturer’s replacement schedule. OSHA and ANSI don’t set an expiration date. Most manufacturers recommend replacing the suspension at least every 12 months and the shell within about 5 years, sooner with heavy use or lots of sun. The date of manufacture is molded inside the shell, usually as a small clock-style dial.

Keep it out of the back window of your truck. Heat and UV break down the plastic faster than anything else.

Don’t paint it or drill it, and don’t use solvents to clean it. Mild soap and water is all you need.

Be careful with stickers. Most manufacturers allow a limited number of adhesive stickers, but they can hide cracks and some adhesives can weaken the shell. Keep them small and away from the edge of the brim, and check your manufacturer’s instructions.

Hard hat FAQ

Does OSHA require hard hats on construction sites?

Yes, where there’s a risk of head injury. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.100 requires protective helmets for workers in areas where there’s a possible danger of head injury from impact, falling or flying objects, or electrical shock and burns. The helmets must meet ANSI Z89.1. OSHA doesn’t require Type 2 helmets, but many general contractors do.

Is a Type 2 hard hat better than a Type 1?

For most construction work, yes. A Type 2 hard hat passes the same top impact tests as a Type 1, plus tests for side, front and back impacts. Most also include a chin strap. Type 1 hard hats are lighter and less expensive, and they’re still acceptable where your site’s hazard assessment allows them.

Which hard hat class do electricians need?

Class E, which is proof-tested to 20,000 volts. Class E hard hats are non-vented. Our pick for electricians is the Klein Tools 60564, which combines Class E with Type 2 side impact protection.

Do hard hats expire?

Hard hats don’t have a legal expiration date, but they do wear out. Most manufacturers recommend replacing the suspension every 12 months and the shell within about 5 years of the manufacture date, or right away after an impact or any visible damage.

Can you wear a hard hat backwards?

Only if the manufacturer certifies it. Look for the reverse-donning symbol, two curved arrows forming a circle, molded inside the shell. Even then, you usually need to turn the suspension around so it sits correctly on your head. If your hat doesn’t have the symbol, wear it with the bill facing forward.

What do hard hat colors mean?

OSHA doesn’t regulate hard hat colors, so there’s no national standard. Many sites use a common convention: white for supervisors, engineers and foremen; yellow for general laborers and equipment operators; blue for electricians and other technical trades; orange for road crews and new workers; green for safety officers; and brown for welders. Your site’s rules always come first.

Are carbon fiber hard hats safe?

They can be, if they’re certified. Check for an ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 marking with a Type and Class inside the shell. Many hard hats sold as carbon fiber are standard plastic with a printed carbon pattern, which is fine as long as the hat itself is certified.

How should a hard hat fit?

Snug enough that it doesn’t move when you bend over or shake your head, with about an inch of space between your head and the shell. Tighten the ratchet until it’s secure but not uncomfortable, and adjust the nape strap so the hat sits level.

Do I need a chin strap?

OSHA doesn’t require one in most cases, but a chin strap is the only thing that keeps your hard hat on during a fall. Many sites require them for work at height, and most Type 2 helmets include one.

The bottom line

For most people in construction, the Milwaukee BOLT Type 2 is the hard hat to buy. It gives you top and side impact protection, a chin strap and the best accessory system on this list. If you want the most protection and a full brim, upgrade to the Studson SHK-1. Electricians should get the Klein 60564, and if you just need a solid traditional hard hat, the MSA V-Gard or Pyramex Ridgeline will do the job for very little money.

Rounding out your PPE?
