In a city increasingly defined by the ubiquity of glass in new buildings, it can take the texture and detail found in the podium levels of The Elm and The Ledbury, two new rental towers rising near Queen and Church streets in Downtown Toronto, to remind us how much is being taken away from us when buildings are clad “only” in glass. While there is something to be said for the very cleanest of glass designs, 98% of what we get with glass includes a mess of cheap mullions covering the gaps. Here however in this image by UrbanToronto Forum contributor skycandy, the texture of multi-shaded brick, the precast windowsills, and the patterns of shadow from the prominent brick framing adds immeasurably to a neighbourhood feeling.
