Canada’s employment ranks increased by 91,000 in December, mostly in full-time work, reports Statistics Canada in the most recent Labour Force Survey. The gains followed an increase of 51,000 in November and are the third employment gain in the past four months. Last year ended with 413,000 more people working in December compared with 12 months earlier.
Construction sector gains trended in line with the overall picture, rising 0.4 per cent from November to add 6,100 workers to the employment ranks in the sector. Compared to 12 months earlier, employment figures for the industry grew 1.5 per cent, adding 23,700 workers over December of 2023. Seasonally adjusted, there were 1,605,400 workers in the sector in December of 2024.
Overall, Canada’s employment rate, or the proportion of the population aged 15 and older who are employed, increased 0.2 percentage points to 60.8 per cent in December, after holding steady in November. The unemployment rate was down 0.1 percentage points from the previous month, coming in at 6.7 per cent in December.
