The Ontario Building Officials Association has issued guidance through its Advisory Services to clarify when safety glass or guarding is required in front of a window or interior structural glass. This has been a matter of confusion in the past, with some inspectors requiring safety glass in any window with a sill below the one-meter threshold.

Read the full bulletin.

“In a Part 9 building, only glass or glazing in locations described in Sentences (6), (7) and (8) needs to be protected by a guard or designed to withstand guard loads. The Code does not require protection of windows in other floor areas.”

The referenced sentences refer to glazing on second floors or higher; glass railings around stairs, ramps and landings; and windows adjacent or at the ends of stairs and ramps that people might fall into. Essentially, the guidance allows for windows on ground floors that are not around stairs to go all the way to the floor without needing guards or safety glass.
