The Net Zero Teesside power station project is valued as £833m and sees Balfour deliver major onshore works for the plant as construction partner to Technip Energies.
It marks a return to pole position in the monthly work won rankings after a long absence and lifted the firm to fourth position in the 12-month rolling league for took contracts secured.
Private builder Bowmer + Kirkland came in second place with a clutch of wins totalling over £760m, according to data compiled by Barbour ABI.
Its January haul was led by the £274m main contract for Newcastle University’s Castle Leazes student accommodation redevelopment. B+K is also lined up as lead builder for the planned TV and film studio at Sunderland’s former Crown Works shipyard, although funding has yet to be fully secured.
Overall, the top 50 contractors kicked off 2026 with a strong £4.58bn of work secured across just 112 projects. That narrowly beat December’s £4.52bn year-end surge and points to an uplift in awards driven by a handful of major project wins.
In the rolling 12-month rankings, Strabag held top spot, buoyed by its £3bn long-term Haweswater Aqueduct Resilience Programme contract.
