The firm and civils partner A E Yates have teamed up with Finnish specialist Hyperion Robotics to deliver 90 high-strength concrete pipe support bases for a flagship carbon capture project on Teesside.
The components – known as sleepers – will support 1.3km of pipeline forming part of the East Coast Cluster carbon capture network.
Hyperion’s robotic 3D printing process eliminates the need for traditional formwork while producing precise, repeatable units offsite.
Compared with conventional precast, the approach cuts concrete and steel use by 40% and reduces embodied carbon by up to 50%.
The sleepers are also engineered to be up to ten times stronger while weighing up to 60% less, enabling faster installation with less plant and labour on site.
Manufacturing will take place at Hyperion’s new Forge I facility near Scunthorpe, underlining a growing shift towards UK-based advanced manufacturing for infrastructure components.
Momentum is now building behind printed concrete across major civils jobs.
Murphy has already deployed Hyperion’s technology on National Grid’s Yorkshire Green Energy Enablement programme, using printed structures for substation foundations at Overton and Monk Fryston.
Earlier schemes have also seen Severn Trent Water use the technology for pipe support foundations, later installed by Mott MacDonald Bentley at the Strongford Net Zero Hub.
The Teesside job marks another step towards scaling the technology, with contractors increasingly turning to 3D printing to cut carbon, reduce materials and speed up delivery on complex infrastructure builds.
