Starting July 1, Type 2 hard hats with integrated chin straps will be mandatory on all Canadian Construction Safety Council (CCSC) member construction sites. This requirement applies to all personnel, including trade partners and visitors, who must wear a manufacturer-approved four-point chin strap hard hat suitable for the hazards present.
The change aims to address the fact that traumatic brain injuries account for about 25% of construction-related fatalities, primarily from falls and struck-by incidents. Type 2 hard hats enhance safety by:
- Providing enhanced protection against vertical and lateral impacts, significantly reducing concussion and skull fracture risks.
- Ensuring a secure fit during slips or falls, maintaining reliability in dynamic environments.
- Preventing dropped objects by reducing the risk of hard hats becoming hazards themselves.
This initiative underscores the commitment to improving safety standards in the construction industry, ultimately protecting workers’ lives.
