The Ontario government has created the Building Code Short Term Advisory Body charged with conducting a comprehensive review of the Ontario building code with a mandate to identify “unnecessary complexity, delays and costs that can hinder construction, ” according to the commitee’s consultation paper.

The committee members are:

  • Leo Grellette, chair – former chief building official for the city of Vaughan;
  • Paul De Berardis, vice – president of Building Standards and Engineering at RESCON;
  • Michael Seiling – chief building official for the city of Kitchener;
  • Stephen Wong – chair of the Building Code Commission;
  • Douglas Tarry – a homebuilder from St. Thomas, Ont.

The consultation paper promises a section-by-section review of the code to remove duplication, conflicts and unnecessary regulation with the goal of streamlining building approvals. The committee has a one-year term.

A public consultation has been opened for anyone wishing to recommend areas of the code for the committee to consider. Commenting is open until Aug. 14.
