OTTAWA — Gov. Gen. Mary Simon presented Canada’s top architecture and landscape architecture honours at a ceremony held Jan. 24 at Rideau Hall.

The Governor General’s Medals in Architecture and Landscape Architecture recognize impressive projects and individuals from across the country.

The projects honoured in the architecture category are:

  • Reception Pavilion of the Quebec National Assembly (Quebec City) – GLCRM Architectes
  • Cherry Street Stormwater Facility – gh3* (Toronto) – R.V. Anderson Associates Limited
  • Forest Pavilion (Winnipeg) – Public City Architecture Inc.
  • The Idea Exchange Old Post Office (Cambridge, Ont.) – RDH Architects (RDHA)
  • The Brearley School (New York City) – KPMB Architects
  • Julis Romo Rabinowitz Building & Louis A. Simpson International Building, Princeton University (Princeton, NJ) – KPMB Architects
  • Tom Patterson Theatre (Stratford, Ont.) – Hariri Pontarini Architects
  • Village at the End of the World (Nova Scotia) – MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects Ltd.
  • Point William Cottage (Muskoka, Ont.) – Shim-Sutcliffe Architects
  • 60_80 Atlantic Avenue (Toronto) – BDP Quadrangle
  • Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre (Vancouver) – Formline Architecture

The 2022 Governor General’s Medal in Landscape Architecture was awarded to Ronald Fr. Williams, who is a professor and director at the School of Landscape Architecture at the Universite de Montreal.

He graduated from McGill University in 1964 with a degree in architecture and then Sorbonne in 1965 with a Diplôme de civilisation française. Williams also co-founded the Montreal landscape and urban architecture firm WAA (Williams, Asselin, Ackaoui and associates) along with partners Vincent Asselin, Malaka Ackaoui, and Sachi Williams and is a fellow of the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) and of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC).

The Governor General’s Medals in Architecture and Landscape Architecture medals are presented in partnership with the RAIC, CSLA and the Canada Council for the Arts.
