The industry first is a central part of a plan to achieve net-zero carbon by 2050 and takes the house builder forward to meet the Government’s commitment to ban gas boilers in new-build properties from 2025.

Matthew Pratt, Redrow’s chief executive, told the PA news agency its customers are asking for reassurance their homes will help them to future-proof their heating.

“We will shortly go above and beyond regulatory requirements, future-proofing our homes and helping our customers lower their energy use.”

Redrow is working in partnership with Mitsubishi, Vaillant and Daiken for installation, with each offering their own training centre and facilities for installers to ensure a smooth transition from gas boilers.

The decision follows a Mitsubishi Electric heat pump trial in real homes comparing energy consumption for heating and hot water against a benchmark home with a traditional gas boiler.

Redrow found that heat pumps consumed significantly less energy than gas boilers, operating at an efficiency of around two to three times that of an A-rated boiler.
