« Back to Glossary IndexGross floor area or GFA is a term regularly referenced at many phases of a construction project. The GFA is a form of measurement for the overall floor area of a building.
In order to get the GFA of the building you measure from the inside of the exterior envelope of the building the full floor plate. Key items are traditionally not included in the GFA including:
- Voids
- Exterior spaces (these may be taken off seperately)
- Elevator shafts
- Stairwells
- Duct shafts
GFA is traditionally used to arrive at the cost per unit of a building.
