99 Subway Extensions and Multiple ‘Supertalls’ Made Headlines in August, 2025
With Labour Day weekend now behind us, students back in class, and a late-summer breeze in the air, we look back at August, with our coverage was shaped by the continued rise of ‘supertall’ towers, including UrbanToronto’s feature on nine projects 300 metres or taller reshaping the skyline. Transit milestones also drew strong attention, from the long-delayed Eglinton Line 5 and the Yonge Line 1 North Subway Extension tunnelling contract, to fresh construction progress on Ontario Line 3.

Two major Vaughan proposals captured strong reader interest. At #12, Cortel Group’s plan for 1890 Highway 7 envisions 19 towers up to 48 storeys beside the future Concord GO station, as one of the region’s largest redevelopment applications to date. At #11, Morguard Corporation and Dev-West Properties’ nine-tower Woodbridge Square proposal, with buildings rising as high as 57 storeys, further highlighted the transformation of Highway 7 into a high-density corridor.

Transit and height once again garnered plenty of attention in August. At #1, our feature on Toronto’s growing roster of nine ‘supertall’ developments drew the month’s highest readership, showing the evergreen interest in the city’s tallest towers. Heritage and high-rise development combined at #3 with a new 69-storey rental tower proposed for 164-168 Isabella Street, while Council’s July settlements endorsing more than 8,700 residential units across the city landed at #8. Transit stories held strong positions throughout the list. At #2, we revisited Union Station’s Bay Concourse a decade after its closure, while #4 and #5 featured milestones for Ontario Line 3, from the start of tunnel work at Gerrard station to updated renderings of Exhibition station.

At #13, interest in Ookwemin Minising (pronounced oak-way-min mi-ni-sing) remained strong as visitors continue to flock to Biidaasige Park (pronounced bee-dah-see-geh), which opened in July as Toronto’s largest new park in a generation. Both Anishinaabemowin terms, the former means “place of the black cherry trees” and the latter “sunlight shining towards us.”
August brought a shake-up to the bottom half of the Database rankings. At #10, Vaughan’s Woodbridge Square Redevelopment proposal made its debut. Downtown Toronto projects followed close behind, with 8 Elm returning to the list at #9 after a three-month absence, and the United BLDG entering at #8 as its glazing and bronze cladding. Meanwhile, One Delisle climbed three places to #7 as its unique geometry and cladding progress visibly on Yonge Street. The top half of the list comes with no surprises, with Pinnacle One Yonge claiming the top spot, followed by One Bloor West.

Our Top Ten Busiest Threads
The Yonge Line 1 North Subway Extension thread came in at #11, drawing heightened interest following last month’s story on the tunnelling contract award. The project, which will extend Line 1 by 8 kilometres from Finch to Richmond Hill Centre, will be a major transit expansion in the York Region. Discussions have focused on the project’s scale and its role alongside the three other major subway projects currently under construction across Toronto.

Meanwhile, transit projects once again dominated Forum discussions in August, with Eglinton Line 5 retaining the top spot as anticipation builds ahead of its long-awaited opening. Pinnacle One Yonge and One Bloor West followed at #2 and #3, while Ontario Line 3 inched from #5 to #4 as tunnel work began at Gerrard station. Ookwemin Minising held at #6 as visitors continued to explore Biidaasige Park. Union Station Revitalization rounded out the list at #10.
