Almost 1,100 participants engaged in hands-on training, explored skilled trades career pathways and connected with industry professionals at this year’s Tools in the Trades Boot Camp workshops, put on by Support Ontario Youth (SOY).
“Our mission has always been to provide a gateway into the skilled trades through hands-on learning and direct industry connections,” said Melanie Winter, SOY’s executive director. “This year’s success demonstrates the ongoing need for accessible training opportunities and the impact they have on future apprentices.”
Of the 1,089 participants in the industry-led workshops who gained practical trade experience, SOY reports that 71 have already secured employment, with more career opportunities in progress. The Employment Ontario program is funded in part by the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the boot camp,” stated Oto-obong Moses Eshiet. “The experience was invaluable, providing education, leadership, hands-on training and exposure to industry best practices that have further solidified my passion for the trade.”
Tools in the Trades Boot Camp is a series of free, one-day events designed to introduce participants to the skilled trades. The workshops provide hands-on training, networking opportunities with industry professionals, and a complimentary starter tool kit to help kickstart careers. The program supports a number of skilled trades sectors, including construction, industrial and motive power, covering over 140 skilled trades available in Ontario.
“As a woman who is new to the trades, my experiences at Tools in the Trades helped me overcome barriers within myself as I worked toward obtaining an Apprenticeship,” explained participant Amanda Vey. “Through guided learning and time on the tools, I gained new skills and faced my fears.”
