Full Description
This construction business plan template is a ready-to-edit Word document for writing a business plan for your construction company. It contains suggested content in every section that you can modify to match your business, so you do not have to start from a blank page.
What is a construction business plan?
A construction business plan is a written document that describes your company, the services you offer, the market you work in and how you will win and deliver work profitably. It sets out your goals, marketing and sales strategy, management and staffing, and financial projections such as sales forecasts, profit and loss, and cash flow. Owners use it to plan growth, and lenders, investors, partners and bonding companies often ask for one.
When to use it
- Starting a new general contracting or trade contracting business
- Applying for a business loan, line of credit or equipment financing
- Bringing in a partner or investor
- Planning expansion into a new market, region or service
- Setting annual goals and checking performance against them
What’s included
The download is an editable Word document (.docx) with these sections:
- 1.0 Executive Summary: objectives, mission and keys to success
- 2.0 Company Summary: company ownership and company history
- 3.0 Services
- 4.0 Market Analysis Summary: market segmentation, target market segment strategy, service business analysis, and competition and buying patterns
- 5.0 Web Plan Summary: website marketing strategy and development requirements
- 6.0 Strategy and Implementation Summary: SWOT analysis, competitive edge, marketing strategy, sales strategy and sales forecast
- 7.0 Management Summary: personnel plan
- 8.0 Financial Plan: important assumptions, break-even analysis, projected profit and loss, projected cash flow, projected balance sheet and business ratios
- Appendix: sales forecast, personnel, profit and loss, cash flow and balance sheet tables
How to fill it out
- Start with the company summary and services. These are the easiest sections and set up the rest.
- Research your local market: types of clients, project sizes, competitors and how clients buy.
- Complete the SWOT analysis honestly, then write your competitive edge, marketing and sales strategy from it.
- Build the sales forecast from realistic project counts and values, not hopes.
- Complete the personnel plan and the financial tables. Check the numbers with your accountant.
- Write the executive summary last, as a one-page overview of the whole plan.
- Replace all suggested text with your own and remove sections that do not apply.
Tips
- Keep the plan specific to construction: bonding capacity, equipment, licensing and the type of work you bid.
- Be conservative with cash flow. Retainage and slow payment are normal in construction.
- Review the plan at least once a year and update the forecast.

Frequently asked questions
What should a construction company business plan include?
An executive summary, company description, services, market analysis, competition, marketing and sales strategy, management and staffing, and a financial plan with sales forecast, profit and loss, cash flow and balance sheet projections. This template covers each of these sections.
How long should a construction business plan be?
Long enough to answer the reader’s questions and no longer. For internal planning, a short plan may be enough. For a bank or investor, expect a fuller document with financial tables. Focus on clear numbers and realistic assumptions rather than page count.
Do I need a business plan to get a construction business loan?
Many lenders ask for one, along with financial statements and projections, especially for new companies. A plan shows how the loan will be used and repaid. Requirements vary by lender, so ask what they need before you apply.
How do I write the market analysis for a construction company?
Define the area you serve and the clients you target, such as homeowners, developers or public owners. Describe demand, typical project types and sizes, your main competitors and how clients choose contractors. Use local data where you can find it.
How often should I update my business plan?
Review it at least once a year, and whenever something significant changes, such as a new service, a major client, a new partner or a change in the market. Update the sales forecast and financial projections each time.
