Full Description
This waste log template is a simple waste disposal log sheet for recording the waste that leaves your construction project. Tracking waste is sometimes a project requirement, and with green building programs such as LEED being adopted on more projects, a clear record of what was removed, how much and where it went is becoming essential.
What is a waste disposal log?
A waste disposal log is a running record of waste removed from a site. Each entry shows the type of material, the quantity, who received it, such as a landfill, recycler or hauler, and any remarks. On construction projects it supports waste management plans, recycling and diversion targets, and audits by the owner or a green building reviewer. It also gives the site team a quick way to check hauling volumes and costs.
When to use it
- Projects with a construction waste management plan or recycling target
- LEED and other green building projects that need waste documentation
- Demolition and renovation work that produces large volumes of debris
- Sites where the contract requires records of waste removal
- Tracking bins and hauler loads to check invoices
What’s included
The download is an editable Word document (.docx) set up as a waste disposal log sheet. It lets you track:
- Material
- Quantities
- Who received the material
- Any special remarks
How to fill it out
- Note the project name and location on the sheet, and keep the log in the site office or with the person who signs for bin swaps.
- Record each load as it leaves site: the date, the material type, such as concrete, wood, metal, drywall or mixed waste, and the quantity.
- Use consistent units for quantities, such as tons or cubic yards, so totals can be added up.
- Note who received the material: the hauler, landfill, transfer station or recycling facility.
- Add remarks such as the ticket or receipt number, contamination issues or whether the load was recycled.
- Attach or file the weigh tickets and receipts with the log.
- Total the log each month and report it to the project manager or sustainability lead.
Tips
- Separate waste streams on site. Clean, sorted materials are easier to recycle and to record.
- Match log entries to hauler invoices every month.
- Do not use a general waste log for hazardous waste. Regulated wastes usually need specific manifests and handling under local rules.

Frequently asked questions
What is a waste log?
A waste log is a record of waste generated or removed, entry by entry. On a construction site it typically lists the date, material, quantity, destination or receiver and remarks, so the team can show how waste was handled and how much was recycled or sent to landfill.
What should a construction waste log include?
At a minimum: date, material type, quantity with units, the hauler or facility that received it, and a reference such as a ticket number. Some projects also record whether each load was recycled or landfilled, to calculate diversion rates.
Why do LEED projects need waste records?
LEED construction waste management credits are based on documented quantities of waste diverted from landfill compared with the total generated. A consistent log, backed by hauler tickets and reports, makes it much easier to prepare that documentation at the end of the job.
Can I use this log for hazardous waste?
Use it as a general site record only. Hazardous and other regulated wastes, such as asbestos, usually require specific manifests, licensed carriers and record keeping set by local regulations. Follow those requirements and keep the official documents separately.
Who should fill out the waste disposal log?
Usually the site supervisor, site coordinator or whoever signs for bin swaps and hauler pickups. Assign one person so entries are not missed, and have the project manager review the totals each month.
