Makayla Markell of Lockwood Brothers Construction tells us what went into this majestic custom home on the shores of the Rideau River.
This is a new build. It’s in Merrickville, Ont. The mission for this one was to create a modern yet timeless design. So we kind of got some ideas from a lot of farmhouse designs but took that and added more modern features to it. We used a lot of pine beams and they wanted it to be timeless, so we added the stone columns and the great big windows for natural light and the archway at the at the front entrance. They really wanted something that was timeless but modern with some craftsmanship added to it that was their main focal point.
The main roof is shingles and we added steel elements to the taller wall section there.
Around here, we’re known for our wood elements. On a lot of our homes, you will see either new pine or reclaimed beams. And in this case, because they wanted more of that modern look, we did the new pine versus the reclaimed but just added some warmth to it. So it broke it up and made that focal point at the rear. The river runs behind there so this is a nice focal point from that view that kind of breaks up the space but adds warmth to it. It overlooks the Rideau River, so that’s why we did the glass railing there, so we didn’t disrupt the view from the front or the river.
The beams are eight-by-eights. We have our carpentry team here at Lockwood. So we milled them here and stained them and cut them and built the whole bracket system here. Cutek stain. We use that for all of our exteriors. That’s that same pine for the deck. The covered deck is eight feet by just under 13 feet. And then you have the other portion. There’s two covered decks. Sliding doors underneath for a bottom floor walkout. The top is main living area and kitchen and a dining room. So all open concept there. There is another door there that enters into the primary bedroom. The carpenters built all the wood beams and these little corbels underneath the steel awnings.
The stone is Shouldice. Roberval Shouldice estate stone. We did white mortar here.
We definitely hit the energy standard with this one. We did triple-pane, Energy Star-rated windows. This is a real wood door that we actually got from the States. It’s a custom door. That was definitely a photo that the client had found on Pinterest with the arch top, and we were going to build that ourselves. But then we found one that we could get built already that would have been better for Energy Star to keep it all airtight in there and not have any warping and stuff with us doing it. So we ordered that from the States. It’s a very expensive. It’s got wipers and seals everywhere.
The garage doors there are not wood but they are upgraded to give it that wood look. Still steel, but it does have that texturing of the wood. We got a stain colour to match the wood door.
There’s the farmhouse element to give it that timeless feel and not be too modern. Because they didn’t want it to be super-modern. They wanted it to stand out but they didn’t want it to look too modern. They wanted to give it some country feel to it. My favorite part, really, is the staggered garages there. I love the way that looks, especially from the road. If you’ve gotta have all that garage, which everybody in a house this big does, that’s a nice way to take away from that feeling of just seeing nothing but garage.
I liked the different use of textures and materials, like the horizontal siding with the board and batten and the stone and the large windows and the grids. It has a lot of different features in it and the arches. This is James Hardie siding. It was kind of nice how we did the different materials in there. Originally, we did have another section of the garage in the stone but we found it looked too heavy that way. So we kind of broke it up, doing it this way, and then having the the entry into the the porch there with the high stone and then the middle section with the large window really accents it.
The three small windows are a shower stall there, then the toilet and then there is a closet in the bedroom. So we don’t have honking big windows over there. We had to add windows to give it something instead of just a flat wall. So that was why we opted for those smaller ones.
