Vertical transportation has become a mandatory part of our every day lives. We rely on escalators and elevators to get us everywhere. From elderly people who have trouble climbing stairs, to regular folk who just don’t want to climb three floors. Elevators and escalators are everywhere.

As baby boomers continue to age these devices will be required more frequently in buildings. Yet I find an increasing number of people don’t actually know how this equipment functions or get’s installed.

Today we’ll be sharing with you a few videos on how these incredible pieces of engineering work:

How Elevators Work

The below videos does a great job in running through the different parts of a roped elevator. Explaining some of the safety functions as well as a some of the parts including governors, counterweights, machines and brakes.

How Elevators Are Made

The process behind making an elevator is complex and requires a lot of precision. The below video goes into how the various parts are fabricated and also breaks down each of the parts in more detail explaining the elevators in more detail.

Elevator Replacement Process

This elevator replacement video is a special process that is done by KONE however, it will help you to understand some of the steps of installing elevators, many of which are the same in new buildings.

How Escalators Are Made

For those of you that are fans of the show “How It’s Made” you’ll enjoy this video. The below video walks through the steps involved for fabrication and construction of an escalator. If you pay close attention it will help you to understand some of the inner workings of the elevator.

Time Lapse – Escalator Replacement

As buildings get older equipment will more frequently need to be updated and replaced. The below video is a time lapse of an escalator replacement within a mall environment. Pay close attention to the lifting and rigging that is being used with beams and A-Frames for a better understanding of installation procedures.
